Oversized Overalls and Hashtags

Okay, it's nearing the end of September and I'm still drinking iced lattes. Where is the fall weather I'm longing for? It looks like my Summer wardrobe is getting an extended season, #FML.

I'm a big believer in the theory that good fashion doesn't need to come at a premium. Sure, shopping vintage or scouring Chinatown is exhausting, but it can be so worth it. That being said I had been desperate for overalls for sometime and had little to no luck in my usual consignment stores. I found these at Urban Outfitters of all places, and heavily reduced at that. Sure they are gigantic on me, but I kind of love that. I'm kind of a goof, and this (endearing?) quality it sometimes reflected in my outfit choices.

These overalls work great as a transition piece. Once the colder weather finally sweeps over Toronto I can break out the flannel and go for a truly 90's revival look.

Bedazzling Denim - Pre-Fall Lookbook

Fall officially begins tomorrow, but Toronto is still getting 20+ weather. As much as it pains me to put away my Summer wardrobe I'm looking forward to turning over a new leaf in my personal fashion brand. I want to still be able to capture the feeling of Autumn but chunky knits and layers might not yet be an option. Instead, I'm opting for colours and fabrics that resonate a little better with the changing season, and having a little fun with it too. Using one dramatic accessory can really tie together a look without getting too busy, and it's a great way to put your personal spin on a transitioning outfit.

Yeaaaa my hair is kind of out of control. I look a bit like a wild thing, no?

Menswear Staple - The Scarf

There are some items every man should have in his wardrobe. With the colder weather upon us it is time to reflect on the simplest staple: the scarf. No no no, put away that itchy scratchy thing you've been tying around your neck, your scarf should be an extension of the rest of your outfit so put some thought into it for goodness sakes.

Fall is a good time to break out your darker neutrals. Earthy browns, patterned or plain, make for an easy and versatile addition to your wardrobe.

If you're feeling more adventurous try an orange addition. This colour does not, however, work for every complexion. And if you do choose to rock orange I recommend opting for a solid, rather than patterned accessory. A little embellishment never hurt anyone though.

Pick up on the colour of your favourite suit by matching it with a coordinating scarf. Go a few shades lighter to keep it fresh and tuck it beneath your jacket for a classic look.

This red and black number in MacQuarrie Tartan is a great transition piece, able to carry over from fall to winter. The colours, while vivid, can in this accessory work as a functional neutral or a centre piece depending on how you style. If you are feeling especially adventurous, like the gentleman above, try mixing your patterns.

Who says a scarf can't be multi-functional? Okay, while our model above might be wearing a bit more than a scarf I think the motto "the bigger the better" works well here. Often criticized as a blanket I like to wear a scarf like this one myself. Bundle it up tightly around your neck to keep yourself protected from the elements or drape it over your jacket for a more bohème ensemble.

Monochrome has been in vogue for a while now but it's time to break up the palette with a bit of pattern. This look is a derivative of the pattern-on-pattern and the monochrome trends. You can achieve this style fairly easily, but it's the confidence that makes the outfit.

Protip: match your scarf to your pocket square.

Our Bodies Are Not Our Own

The other day as I was walking home from work this guy biked past me and shouted "Hey pretty!"

I never know how to react in these circumstances (feeling so flustered and exposed), and so I always react badly. This time I said something like "that's disgusting." Not my finest, I'll admit.

He stopped and asked me to repeat myself ("What did you say, huh?"), shocked that pretty could speak. And I, feeling so awkward and so... ashamed just gave him the finger over my shoulder and kept walking. Of course, as soon as I had done it I regretted it. I mean, why can't I come up with some witty comment? My sister jokingly told me that I should throw my tampon at him uproariously and say "even cotton goes where you cannot!" but I don't think I could ever go through with that.

And his last comment to me is what sealed that impression. After he got the message, so to speak, he responded with "Stupid fucking stuck up little cunt!"

Look, I realize I gave the guy the finger and that was poor on my part. But let's look at the situation. I wasn't even done up and to be honest I think that after a long day at the office I normally look like a dead woman walking. But I think what it really boils down to is that, despite being haggard (or maybe because of it) it was in that moment that I felt that my body was not my own and so I reacted in anger. My body was for someone else to judge, rate, comment on, and possibly even do with as they please, despite my concent. And when it was clear that his behaviour was not consensual I was suddenly unattractive and the lowest of low.

Listen guys, it's not a compliment even if that's how you mean it. It's street harassment and I don't want it. Here is an infographic (not of my making) that explains it better than the above td;lr:

The above image is, can you believe it, from Playboy. Well done Playboy.

This Girl From Buzzfeed Is So Totally Me.

You know you've been spending too much time online when you start going through the Buzzfeed archives. It's a sick day, okay. Those of you who know me (and know me well), know that I am anything but graceful. Sometimes I try, but then I go and put my foot in my mouth (literally???).

I love Buzzfeed for their awesome no bullshit stance on feminism and their totally relatable content. So who needs to write an "about me" when you've got videos like these. Thanks Ashley Perez. This might be vain, but I want to be your best friend.

Bonus Video! This is also so totally me. The darker, nerdier side of me.
